Odisha Super Cyclone (Oct 29, 1999) devastated the Coastal Odisha endangering millions of human life causing of about 10,000 causalities. SPARC assisted Baird & Associates, Canada in generation of GIS data sets under the CIDA funded storm search protection study for formulating long term protection measures against cyclonic surges. The data sets comprised of revenue village boundaries & settlement locations in seven coastal districts of Odisha linked with demographic information. The infrastructure maps showing major roads, canals were integrated along with the coastal drainage system (rivers & distributaries). Historical data on cyclone and storm surges were integrated for modeling and planning of long term interventions.
GIS based vulnerability mapping helped in
- Visual depiction of the affected area for support intervention
- Hazard mapping for Risk Analysis
- Forms a platform for disaster management & mitigation planning
