SPARC to undertake Pilot Project on use of Drones for Survey and Mapping of Slums in Odisha

Posted on: 20 October 2017

SPARC to deploy drone technology for mapping of household occupied land in selected slums of Puri and Ganjam districts on a pilot basis. The initiative will aid in examining output of drone-based aerial photography to correctly assess land rights of the slum dwellers under the Land Rights to Slum Dwellers Act 2017 notified by the Government of Odisha.

SPARC’s pilot project proposal for deployment of drone-mapping for quick and accurate mapping of slum-household occupied areas shall be supported by the Indian Housing Federation (IHF) and Tata Trusts. For the first time, drone technology shall be deployed to finalise the modalities of slum land survey for redevelopment of slums. The approach is expected to fasten the project and induce transparency in assessment and allotment of land.

The path-breaking legislation of Government of Odisha on ‘Land Rights to Slum Dwellers’ aims at reducing the inequalities faced by the economically weaker sections by providing them land ownership and social security. Success of the Pilot Project shall lead to objective and timely assessment of land rights of more than a million landless populations residing in urban slums across the state of Odisha.
