SPARC to assist in Vegetation Mapping of Eco-restoration Areas in Uttarakhand

Posted on: 20 September 2016

SPARC has been assigned baseline vegetation mapping of treatment areas (degraded forest areas) to be restored through Van Panchayats under the Uttarakhand Forest Resource Management Project (UFRMP).

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) assisted UFRMP aims at eco-restoration of degraded forests in the state through site specific soil and moisture conservation along with effective protection measures through Van Panchayats (VPs).

Out of 5000 VPs in the selected forest ranges of 13 forest divisions, it has been proposed to cover 164 VPs under Batch-I based on the extent of degradation, potential for cluster formation, demography and past performance of VPs.

The project involves identification and delineation of the treatment areas, DGPS based demarcation and survey, vegetation mapping of the treatment area using Cartosat and Resourcesat satellite images, collection of site information on existing vegetation type, soil conditions, regeneration status and disaster vulnerability.

GIS technology is being adopted to address the forest degradation and deforestation issue, which has a severe impact on climate and ecosystem.
