SPARC implemented innovative Geo-ICT solutions to bring transparency in restoration of degraded forests in 840 community managed forest areas in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand.
Selection of degraded forest areas was done scientifically adopting GIS and satellite remote sensing analysis of forest cover, terrain and demography. Project areas were delineated precisely using Differential GPS and micro-plans were prepared for undertaking afforestation and eco-restoration activities by using baseline land use and terrain maps prepared from very high resolution satellite images and field surveys.
A customised Geo-ICT solution, integrating GPS, Mobile and GIS systems was developed and implemented by SPARC to bring transparency in the eco-restoration process. Time stamped, geo-tagged images of field interventions captured through a mobile app was integrated with the GIS system to authenticate reported activities by the communities. The system ensured accountability, transparency and objective monitoring of program implementation.
