Case Summary

The assignment involved mapping for OSHFWS (Orissa State Health & Family Welfare Society) incorporating important geographic settings for analyzing the environment impacting the health and healthcare infrastructure to plan for befitting healthcare programs and develop healthcare facilities. The database comprised of land use of urban areas derived from satellite imagery, existing infrastructure such as roads, water resources, healthcare institutions (hospitals, dispensary, nursing home, clinics, medicine shops, etc) of Sambalpur and Rourkela urban areas. GPS based location information on other healthcare support infrastructure were also integrated into the system.

GIS based mapping of health care facility helped in

  • Visual platform for understanding the regional factors affecting health, existing health care facilities, analysis and planning of healthcare facilities
  • Base map for formulation/ implementation of health care schemes
  • Monitoring of implementation plan
