Client:Department of Water Resources, Govt. of Odisha
Case Summary

Computation of loss of live storage of Hirakud Reservoir due to sedimentation. As per the Reservoir Sedimentation Committee report (1982) of Govt. of India it is essential to conduct the capacity survey on regular interval of once in 5 year. As Hirakud reservoir was already operated for more than 50 years (build in 1957), there has been a substantial reduction in the live storage due to sedimentation deposit in the reservoir. Dept. of Water Resources wanted to compute the loss in live storage so as to redefine the operation pattern of the reservoir. SPARC assisted the Water Resource Dept. of Odisha by computing the live storage loss using remote sensing technology approved by CWC.

The Remote Sensing based sedimentation study helped in

  • Scientific assessment of the sedimentation deposited over the years to as-on-date carrying capacity of the reservoir
  • GIS based representation of the reservoir basin to visually understand the water storage capacity at different levels
