Case Summary

The Jharsuguda Region is rapidly growing due to mining (Ib valley coal block) and industrial growth (Various steel, thermal power and aluminum industries like Vedanta alumina and Sterlite Energy). The H&UD Dept. of Odisha wants to control and regulate the development in this region. Therefore a master plan of the region was prepared with a vision upto 2030. Preparation of Master Plan involves Land use plan, Housing Plan, Traffic & Transportation Plan, Water Resource Development & Drainage Plan, Environment Plan, Solid Waste Management Plan, Social Infrastructure, Zoning Regulation, Utility Service Plan, Economic Plan, Disaster Management Plan and Slum Development Plan.

The GIS based regional planning helped in

  • Map based collation of developmental information from secondary sources such as SOI topographic maps, High Resolution Satellite Imagery, village cadastral maps to facilitate identification of the current land use/ land status
  • Provides a visual platform for planning of proposed land use, urban zones, infrastructure
  • Map based monitoring and control of implementation plan
