Case Summary

East Coast railway an important segment of the Indian railways has head office at Bhubaneswar and controls all the Land and Infrastructural facilities in the region. The ECoR had a large repository of the manual design drawings and reports which were difficult to search and reference in absence of a proper cataloguing system. The assignment involved development of a document management system through conversion of the manual drawings / available CAD drawings in to digitized formats along with conversion of the associated information, generation of appropriate metadata. The data generated in the process were subjected to codification and indexing process to facilitate unique document identification and efficient search process. The process also involved development of a document management system to facilitate document archival and quick search and retrieval of documents.

The document archival of drawings and plans helped in

  • Development of a permanent/ digital storage of the plans and drawings for easy replication/ quick information retrieval
  • The digitized design drawings also used as as input document to facilitate automated modeling and facility management for infrastructure development
