Case Summary

The assignment involves formulation of a proposal for CREC (Conservation Reserve cum Elephant Corridor) to facilitate elephant movements from Hadgadakuldia Sanctuary to Similipal Sanctuary National Park in Odisha reducing human elephant conflicts. The proposed corridor was drawn on topographic maps and were transferred to village cadastral maps in GIS, forest land and intervening Govt. land identified with in the transferred corridor where listed for ground truthing. Satellite imagery of the corridor area was integrated to determine viable elephant movement path. Boundary of the corridor thus, defined was verified on ground to exclude areas already under development (crop lands, stone quarries etc). The proposal was formulated giving boundary co-ordinates(latitude, longitude) & detailed land schedule plot by plot and village by village impacting to elephant movement path.

The GIS based preparation of proposal on conservation reserve helped in

  • Visual representation and realistic assessment of the feasibility of conservation reserve
  • Actual ground assessment through study of recent satellite images, cadastral map based ownership data and toographical features
  • GIS database to assist in further planning and situation analysis in case of a man-animal conflict situation
