Working Plan forms an important document in forestry management of any state. Preparation of working plan involves input from different forest resources. The Forestry Decision Support System built for the Forest Divisions through collation of about 100 forest thematic data layers grouped into a number of logical groups was of significance importance in preparation of the working plan. The decision support system provided information on the forest topography, forest density, vegetation density and degraded forest area to decide on the intervention area. The DSS depicts the reserve forest area into the working coupes classified as per the forest nomenclature and each of the coupes in compartments to accurately identify the intervention area. The DSS can also be utilized to identify the type of plantation to be implemented in different locations as well as the source of seedlings to be supplicated from the nearest nurseries.
Preparation of working plan using GIS helped in
- Availability of map based relevant forestry information to take appropriate decision for forestry intervention planning
- The GIS database forms a platform for monitoring of the implementation of working plan
- Development of digital repository for quick reference/ forestry management
