Client: POSCO India Ltd.
Case Summary

GIS based maps were prepared using revenue cadastral maps, plant layout maps, topographic maps, satellite images for filing of FDP for the 12 million ton steel plant proposed by POSCO-India Ltd in Paradip, Odisha (India). The activities involved creation of composite cadastral maps, transformation and integration of the map with geo- referenced satellite data/ topo data. Involvement of forest land in various types of use zones where estimated in GIS for documentation purpose. An important aspect of the entire process was the vegetation analysis. As the concerned area was unapproachable for physical vegetation study due to the law and order situation. The High Resolution Satellite Imagery was used to analyse the vegetation type and vegetation density within the project area. Sample ground truthing were conducted to verify the analysis the results of which were found to be correct.

The GIS based vegetation study helped in

  • GIS based accurate assessment of the vegetation type/ vegetation density remotely through HRSI which may be replicated for unapproachable areas
  • The study formed an important supplement for preparation of the Forest diversion Proposal
