The Joint venture company of TATA and Sasool of SA has been allotted a coal block for the proposed Coal to Liquid plant in the Angul district. The assignment involved preparation of the GIS based database for environmental parameter value collected from the Air Quality, Water Quality, Sedimentation, Noise monitoring stations established with in and about 10 km radius from the coal block lease area. The parameterized data collected regularly from these monitoring stations are organized in a central repository which is processed through analytical programs to produce key environmental result sets. These environmental result sets are utilized to prepare the thematic map data sets. The base map is prepared through the extraction of the base map data layers such as the natural features such as forests, rivers, natural drains and transport network such as road and railways through data extraction methodologies using the Survey of India topographic map sheets and High Resolution Satellite Images. The base map data layers and the environmental thematic data layers and integrated in GIS environment to prepare environmental maps such as Base map, Forest map, Drainage map, Land use map, Soil map, Vegetation map, Digital Elevation Model, Geology map, Geomorphology map, Groundwater map, Hydrogeology map etc. The maps produced were utilized for submission to MoEF for environmental clearance purpose where as the environmental GIS database was utilized to environmental analytics for the lease area for pollution control and improvement of environmental condition.
The GIS based environmental mapping of the study of the coal block helped in
- Map based analysis of environmental parameters to correctly map the location specific environmental conditions for study of impact analysis
- Compliance to the specifications of MoEF for environmental clearance
- Forms a base line data repository for future impact analysis during mine operation
