USAID FIRE (D) has been assisting the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in utilizing the integrated area planning approach for implementation of slum up-gradation in Bhubaneswar city. In the context it was required to identify and assess the slums under the BMC area to arrive at the tenability status of the slums. This process facilitated identification of slums vulnerable from different health/ life risk factors. This process also identified slums interference with the public interest land. The assignment involved collection and integration of spatial information relevant to tenability assessment. A thorough desk study of the available information was conducted through preparation of the fact sheets Ground verification was conducted along with the information present on the fact sheets for on the spot observation and assessment. A detailed score sheet was prepared and finally a tenability assessment report with score sheets, slum categorization and prioritization was prepared.
The GIS based slum tenability assessment helped in
- Risk & vulnerability assessment of the slums to correctly identify slums for in-situ development and relocation
- Forms a map based platform for decision support for planning & development of schemes for slums in the city
